The Use of Coiled Tubing During Matrix Acidizing of Carbonate Reservoirs

Abstract: A laboratory and field study directed at improved well performance of horizontal wells is discussed. During the study, several wells were matrix acidized using bullhead and coiled tubing placement techniques. The study performed in carbonate reservoirs indicates acid placed with coiled tubing diverted with foam provides excellent zone coverage and damage removal. Conventional bullhead techniques do not result in effective damage removal. The study emphasizes the evaluation of the treatment results and the deve… Show more

“…5). As a consequence, in some cases depending on the relative values of the parameters, even an entirely successful acid stimulation, that would bring for say the damage skin to -4 (at the cost of great efforts…), could bring an increment in productivity of only + 10% compared to what could be achieved at skin zero with a simple CT acid wash and this explains why on open hole horizontals, treatments are often focussing on ensuring a zero skin over the entire length through filter cake removal only 4,5,6,7 . In the case on N'Kossa-South, despite the fact that the wells have long horizontal sections, it was estimated that the wells productivity would indeed benefit from a strong stimulation (target below -2 for the carbonates).…”

“…Where possible and economically viable, coiled tubing should be employed for the placement of matrix treating fluids 1 in both cased and open hole situations (Thomas and Milne 1995).
