The Use of Diaries in Sociological Research on Health Experience

Abstract: Diaries have been relatively neglected as a sociological research method. This paper highlights the value of diary research, drawing on the literature on auto/biographies and health service research as well as a qualitative study of need and demand for primary health care, which used diaries and linked in-depth interviews. In particular, data from the study are used to illustrate the role of the 'diary-interview' method in offering a means to 'observe' behaviour which is inaccessible to participant observation.… Show more

“…The diary as a data collection tool has a strong tradition within feminist research (Elliott, 1997) and is most commonly completed by women (Keleher et al, 2003). Milligan et al (2005) described the use of diaries as a narrative method that has the advantage of allowing participants' control of the amount they chose to reveal and to identify the areas most important to them.…”

“…Berzano and Riis (2012) advise that the use of diaries as a research method must allow time for the development of sufficient intimacy to enable narratives to emerge and that in building up trust and relationships in the field is of key importance. The asymmetry in the researcher -participant relationship is also relevant here as diaries are co-constructed by the author and researcher (Elliott 1997;Kenten 2010).…”

“…Of course it was important to remain with a core bank of prompts for the sake of validity but the potential to have space to responsively explore emerging analytical themes proved fruitful in revealing teachers' possible priorities when thinking about teaching and learning through group discussion in science. In this way understanding was perhaps co-constructed, the diary not being the product solely of the teacher (Elliott 1997;Kenten 2010).…”

“…The use of a diary to collect longitudinal data can add a useful dimension or value to interviewbased methods, particularly for generating questions at interview (Elliot 1997, Alasewski 2006, Kenton 2010, Way 2011. Using a diary alone, however, can exclude those participants unwilling or unable to articulate their feelings in a written format (Hinsliff-Smith and Spencer 2016).…”
