The use of ECT and 6PBP tests to evaluate fracture behavior of adhesively bonded steel/epoxy joints under Mode-III and Mixed Mode III/II

Abstract: Evaluation of fracture energy of adhesive joints under mode-III and mixed-mode III/II is a key issue when failure analyses have to be performed. It is thus useful to determine fracture toughness under mode-III and characterization of crack front behavior of bonded joints under mixed-mode III/II loading conditions, which were the overall goal of this paper. For this purpose, edge crack torsion (ECT) and six-point bending plate (6PBP) tests were employed using steel/epoxy adhesive joint. The experimental tests w… Show more

“…This statement can be justified by the facts that the size of mathematical model is smaller than that of the first-order theory, it is the same as that of third-order model, and in the crucial cases (case II and IV for the hyperbolic shell), its performance was a little bit better than that of the first-order theory. The possible application field of the presented models is to model plated fracture specimens [76][77][78]. “…The details of the FE models are presented in a recent paper (Szekr enyes, 2014d). The delamination tip elements and the global mesh resolution were chosen in accordance with recommendations of the literature (Raju et al, 1988;Mehrabadi, 2014) The position of the delamination was varied in the through thickness direction, these were assigned as cases I, II, III and IV (Szekr enyes, 2014d). The problems are solved for some selected cases and different boundary conditions.…”
