The Use of Electronic Diaries in Dermatology Research

Abstract: Data collection methods are critically important in observational studies. The use of electronic diaries is a novel method which to date has not been utilized in dermatology research. This method has the potential to reduce recall bias. We report on our experience in the use of electronic diaries in a panel study of children with eczema.

“…In many different medical areas--such as neurology [3], sleep medicine [4], paediatrics [5], dermatology [6], gynaecology [7], psychosomatic medicine [8], and rheumatology [9]--electronic diary data provide new insights into processes and temporal relationships. Particularly, in clinical practice and research regarding chronic pain electronic diary assessment is frequently used to examine day-to-day variation in symptoms as well as to investigate the impact of constant self-monitoring on the patient's behaviour [10-12].…”

“…There are many reports describing use of mobile devices as part of the research process. Examples include remote field data collection [1][2][3][4][5] , observational data collection [6][7][8][9] , survey administration, 4,10,11 and patient data diaries [12][13][14][15] . Mobile devices also have the potential to improve the feasibility of conducting research in poor and underserviced areas of the world where this is much needed 16 .…”
