The use of fuzzy set modelling for maintenance planning in a manufacturing industry

Abstract: This article has been written to address the problems relating to the standardization of information when applying delay-time analysis to a maintenance department. This article outlines the inherent problem of combining subjective judgement and objective data. A fuzzy set modelling methodology is introduced which addresses the elicitation of such information, specifically to establish the delay-time environmental model. This methodology has been applied to a case study in order to demonstrate the process invol… Show more

“…In the work of Yang, 8 a combination of FRB inference system and evidential reasoning (ER) is employed in risk assessment and control of basic events in container supply chain systems. Other relevance of the FRB method has been illustrated in the works of Jones et al 10 and Durga et al 11 The capability of the FRB in addressing maritime problems associated with uncertainty is not in doubt as evidenced in the literature above. These literature reviews justify the use of FRB method in combination with the UT method in FCR prediction of marine vessels.…”

“…Although the definition of states by crisp sets is mathematically correct, in many cases it may be regarded as unrealistic in the face of unavoidable measurement errors. Fuzzy set theory has been applied in a variety of fields, including fuzzy CREAM methodology for HRA, ( 9 ) maritime security risk assessment, ( 10 ) port security risk assessment, ( 11 ) decision‐making problems, ( 12,13 ) facility site selection problems, ( 14 ) maintenance planning for the manufacturing industry, ( 15 ) human error assessment in port operations, ( 2 ) fuzzy HEP assessment in a robot drilling system, ( 16 ) and fuzzy HEP analysis in building performance. ( 17 ) In such studies, the use of linguistic variables provides flexible modeling of imprecise data and information.…”

“…Fuzzy Logic ( [47]) has been applied to address the cases in which the lack of knowledge concerns both the degradation model of a component and its parameters (e.g., [1]- [3], [27]). …”
