The use of hybrid operating rooms in neurosurgery, advantages, disadvantages, and future perspectives: a systematic review

Abstract: Background Hybrid operating rooms (hybrid-ORs) combine the functionalities of a conventional surgical theater with the advanced imaging technologies of a radiological suite. Hybrid-ORs are usually equipped with CBCT devices providing both 2D and 3D imaging capability that can be used for both interventional radiology and image guided surgical applications. Across all fields of surgery, the use of hybrid-ORs is gaining in traction, and neurosurgery is no exception. We hence aimed to comprehensivel… Show more

“…While offering advantages like superimposing virtual anatomical structures onto the surgical area, the latter comes with high costs and requires substantial hardware components. However, concerns about the accuracy and reliability of MRN were frequently raised on the other hand [9,10,30,37,39,[41][42][43]49,50].…”

At that time, research mainly focused on the practical benefits of MRN to patients and neurosurgeons and its applicability in various neurosurgical intervention procedures [6,7,9,10,37].…”

“…For instance, hybrid approaches in spinal surgery combine minimally invasive laparoscopic techniques with robotic guidance to enhance the accuracy of vertebral fusion and reduce recovery times. In hip replacements, hybrid techniques involving laparoscopic guidance and robotic assistance allow for precise implant placement and improved joint function [28].…”
