“…The sorption capacity of this new anionic clay is very favorably compared to other reported conventional HT clay behaviors such as those reported by Parker et al that report a ~3 meq/g HT sorption capacity when prepared in carbonate-free solutions, as well as a near-total sorption of sulfates present in the materials being treated. [32] As seen in Table 2, the anionic and cationic sorption exceeds the values reported by Parker et al Currently, the only commercially-viable method for removing sulfates from groundwater is via reverse osmosis. [33] This series of tests shows great promise for a green method of sulfate removal that has yet to be adequately implemented on an industrial scale.…”

“…However, care should be taken when using these data. For example, Parker et al 63 found anion absorption selectivities for MgAl mixed oxides of: SO 4 2-> F -> Cl -> NO 3 -and the anion selectivities predicted by Table 3 are: F -> SO 4 2-> NO 3 -> Cl -. Although, these predictions contradict the experimental results, these differences may be explained on the basis of the CO 3 2-impurities present in the aqueous solution 63 and the oxide adsorption capacities 100 , factors not taken into account in the thermodynamic calculations.…”

“…Hydrotalcites containing one of the anions 2-ethylhexanoate, carbonate, oxalate, malonate, succinate, octanedicarboxylate, benzoate, phthalate, terephthalate, or trimesate with magnesium to aluminum ratios of approximately 3:1 were synthesized by coprecipitation according to the synthesis by Kooli et al [9] Due to an increasing incorporation tendency in the order NO 3 À < Cl À < SO 4 2À < CO 3 2À , [18] nitrate salts were used as counter anions in the metal salts to minimize the incorporation of the counter anion instead of the desired organic anion. Because of the high tendency of carbon dioxide incorporation from air, resulting in carbonate formation, [2] nitrogen was blown into the reaction mixture to avoid this effect.…”
