Purpose -This paper seeks to organize the extensive field and to compile the complete list of information limits. Design/methodology/approach -A thorough analysis of literature from the field beginning with the 1960s up to the present has been performed. Findings -A universal typology of information limits has been proposed. A list of barriers mentioned in the literature of the subject has been compiled.Research limitations/implications -The term "information limits" is not commonly used. Originality/value -The complete list of information limits with bibliographical hints (helpful for future research) is presented.

The present study reports on the use of electronic information services by staff at GCU. It is part of a wider study which reports on usage by both staff and students. It builds on previous work at Leeds Metropolitan University, and as the user population at GCU is well understood the outcomes contain useful baseline data for comparison. It reports on the views of 97 respondents out of an academic staff of about 700. The freely available Internet was the most widely used source, which some respondents viewed as a more appropriate source of vocationally orientated information than passworded databases. Less than a third used the catalogue to find EIS, which raises questions about the future of the catalogue as a free-standing comprehensive resource. Non-use of EIS was rarely due to difficulty of access or use. Staff were pessimistic about their student's skill levels in using EIS.

Glasgow Caledonian University was founded in 1993 with libraries on three sites, the largest being on City Campus. By early 1998 Glasgow Caledonian University had its maximum number of sites ± six ± as a result of incorporating three NHS nursing colleges with their libraries. In July 1998 the three nursing colleges were closed down together with a small satellite campus and the students and staff moved to a new health faculty building on City Campus. The libraries were incorporated into City Campus library, reducing the number of sites to two. The last surviving satellite campus closed in January 2001 so that programmes of evaluation had a multi-site character until 2001.Glasgow Caledonian University's programme of evaluation, centering on an annual satisfaction survey, supplemented by specialist studies and research projects, began in 1994 (Crawford, 1994). The instrument used was a slightly modified version of the questionnaire contained in Van House et al. (1990) Measuring Academic Library Performance. However the performance issues which were measured as less or more successful, rather than less or more satisfied, e.g. taking out and returning books, were not found to be very informative. In the following year (1995) further modifications to the questionnaire were introduced. This instrument was used with necessary alterations until 2001. The present situation and the future of the questionnaire is discussed below.Over the years the programme has been extended to include qualitative methods. This includes independently facilitated focus groups but has also included interviewing and observational methods. These studies have included the following: . Library use by part time students: a focus group investigation, February-April 1997(Crawford, 1997.. Study of the use of electronic services and electronic information services at Glasgow Caledonian University, February-March 1998. Used focus groups and semi structured questionnaires, administered by a researcher (Crawford, 1999).. Serials (proposed discontinuation of) issue survey, 1999. Used a questionnaire.
