The use of micro-electro mechanical systems in vascular monitoring: implications for clinical use

Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to provide a short overview on the successful implementation of BioMEMS sensors in heart failure and vascular medicine. Expert commentary: BioMEMS devices have overcome current limitations in pharmacotherapies for resistant hypertension by electrical modulation of the baroreceeptors. This represents a step towards the development of biomedical micro-devices for those conditions in which pharmacotherapies result poorly effective or elicit unacceptable toxicity.

“…Mechanocardiography (MCG) encompasses gyrocardiography (GCG), seismocardiography (SCG), ballistocardiography (BCG), and phonocardiography (15), and increasing numbers of studies attest to its potential for cardiac performance assessment (16). Unlike other methods, MCG directly measures cardiac mechanics induced by heartbeats (17,18). Despite their advantages, most smartphone-based HR monitoring algorithms rely on SCG signals, with few considering GCG data for HR estimation.…”

“…Advancements in microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) ( 24 ), now common in modern smartphones, have led to the utilization of MEMS sensors in smartphone-based HR monitoring systems ( 25 , 26 ). Mechanocardiography (MCG), which includes gyrocardiography (GCG), seismocardiography (SCG), and ballistocardiography (BCG), measures cardiac mechanics induced by heartbeats ( 27 ).…”

“…The MEMS technology changed our world dramatically and now MEMS can be found in many places around us including airbags, ink jet printers, game controllers, smart phones to name a few. Integration of MEMS within biomedicine is known as Bio-MEMS 1 , and its representative application is a pacemaker. More recently, by taking advantages of miniaturization, high sensitivity, wireless technology, and low energy requirement, MEMS use for implantable pressure sensor has emerged as a new approach to continuously and non-invasively monitor pressures inside the body.…”
