Purpose. The aim of this study was to analyze the body posture of young football players and their untrained peers. Methods. A group of 73 football players and 78 untrained boys, all aged between 11 and 14 years, were studied by measuring body posture indices with computer posturography (the MOrIE technique). spinal angles and curvatures in the sagittal plane and body posture asymmetry in the frontal and transversal plane were measured. body height and mass and bMI were also determined.Results. compared to the untrained boys, the group of football players had lower bMI. The position of pelvis in the frontal plane was more symmetrical (p < 0.001) in football players, but the alignment of the remaining measured parameters was similar between the two groups except for the horizontal symmetry of the waist triangles (a higher incidence of symmetry in some ages groups of football players) and the horizontal symmetry of the shoulder blades (a higher incidence of asymmetry in some ages groups of football players). A postural symmetry index that was created for this study did not find any differentiation among the studied groups. The spinal alignment of the football players featured a more flattened lumbar lordosis. Conclusion. Previously conducted studies on the body posture of young athletes are still not ample and complete, while the results do not clearly indicate the development of posture when subjected to sports training.

Diagnostic investigation can be carried out using non-radiological and non-contact methods. Moiré topography (MT) seems to be a viable alternative to radiographic research in evaluating the spine and/or trunk deviations. The aim of this systematic review was to analyze the current knowledge regarding the reliability and validity of Moiré topography as a screening and diagnostic tool. The systematic review was performed from 2010 until March 2021 in the PubMed, EBSCO, Web of Science, and Scopus databases, according to the eligibility criteria. This review fulfilled the following criteria according to the PICO system: population (children and adolescents), intervention (MT measurement), comparison (repeated MT measurements, MT compared to Cobb angle or scoliometer), outcome (reliability and validity of MT). Eight studies fulfilled the inclusion criteria for further analysis. All the studies were assessed to be of high quality. Included studies found that MT had high repeatability and high intraobserver and interobserver correlation, and correlation between MT parameters and radiographic Cobb angle ranged from moderate to high. The authors reported difficulty in defining the cut-off values for MT parameter (Surface Trunk Rotation—STR), and unsatisfactory sensitivity and specificity of MT examination. The studies did not reveal the advantage of MT as a screening method in the detection of idiopathic scoliosis in comparison to radiograph. Based on the evidence from eight studies, the results indicated moderate evidence for reliability and validity of Moiré topography as a screening and diagnostic tool. There is still no strong evidence for the accuracy of MT.

Evaluation of Size of Trunk Asymmetry in Children Practicing Selected Sports Disciplines

(1) Background: The aim of the study was to assess the body posture of children practicing selected sports disciplines and to compare it to the body posture of non-training children. (2) Methods: 247 children practicing a selected discipline either in primary sports schools or in sports clubs constituted the study group. The control group was composed of 63 children that did not practice any sport. The study of body posture by using the Moiré method allowed for assessing the size of parameters determining body posture. Selected parameters characterizing the position of the shoulders and shoulder blades, the waist triangle, and the position of the posterior iliac spines were analyzed. (3) Results: The differences in the selected parameters were not statistically significant in all parameters except the model describing the values determining the depth of the shoulder blades that were measured in millimeters between the groups. (4) Conclusions: Most of the examined people had correct body posture in the sagittal plane, regardless of the type of sport practiced. In all the examined groups, the most common dysfunctions were asymmetries of moderate intensity in the frontal plane. The results of our own research did not allow us to clearly state whether practicing different sports disciplines and different training loads has a negative or positive impact on body posture. The lack of asymmetry of high intensity in the groups of people practicing various sports disciplines, despite the fact that the given disciplines are asymmetric, may indicate that exercises during the training process are correctly selected.
