Abstract-The recent introduction of novel multifunction hands as well as new control paradigms increase the demand for advanced prosthetic control systems. In this context, an unambiguous terminology and a good understanding of the nature of the control problem is important for efficient research and communication concerning the subject.Thus, one purpose of this paper is to suggest an unambiguous taxonomy, applicable to control systems for upper limb prostheses and also to prostheses in general. A functionally partitioned model of the prosthesis control problem is also presented along with the taxonomy.In the second half of the paper, the suggested taxonomy has been exploited in a comprehensive literature review on proportional myoelectric control of upper limb prostheses.The review revealed that the methods for system training have not matured at the same pace as the novel multifunction prostheses and more advanced intent interpretation methods. Few publications exist regarding the choice of training method and the composition of the training data set. In this context, the notion of outcome measures is essential. By definition, system training involves optimization, and the quality of the results depends heavily on the choice of appropriate optimization criteria. In order to further promote the development of proportional myoelectric control, these topics need to be addressed.

Control algorithms for upper limb myoelectric prostheses have been in development since the mid-1940s. Despite advances in computing power and in the performance of these algorithms, clinically available prostheses are still based on the earliest control strategies. The aim of this review paper is to detail the development, advantages and disadvantages of prosthetic control systems and to highlight areas that are current barriers for the transition from laboratory to clinical practice. Current surgical strategies and future research directions to achieve multifunctional control will also be discussed. The findings from this review suggest that regression algorithms may offer an alternative feed-forward approach to direct and pattern recognition control, while virtual rehabilitation environments and tactile feedback could improve the overall prosthetic control.

The general field of biostimulation and bioelectric control as applied to various prosthetic devices are discussed, as well as the application from these areas to future developments, not only in various aspects of clinical medicine, but also in industrial, commercial, and training situations, as well as to certain areas of aerospace operations. iii AMD-CR-01-4-66 SUMMARYThe Soviets are gaining considerable experience in the broad field of alloplasty, as well as in the design, construction, and application of equipment for artificial circulation, oxygenation, hypothermia, and hemodialysis. In the latter areas they seem to be suffering from a lack of technical and professional competence, as well as from poor materials and construction technology.The Soviets have introduced two new designs for the construction of artificial heart valves, a teflon-flap type and a segmented spherical model, Both of these deserve long-term clinical evaluation.
