The use of preanalytical quality indicators: a Turkish preliminary survey study

Abstract: ObjectivesThe utilization of reliable quality indicators (QIs) proven to be suitable for monitoring and improvement tools is one of the best choices to minimize of the risk of errors in all laboratory processes called as total testing process (TTP). In 2008, a Working Group “Laboratory Errors and Patient Safety” (WG-LEPS) established by International Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine (IFCC) developed the Model of Quality Indicators (MQI) complying with requirements of the ISO 15189:2012 … Show more

“…18 In Turkey, laboratories are periodically inspected by the Ministry of Health in line with the Quality Standards and Hospital Efficiency On-site Evaluation Guide prepared by the ministry. 19 In our study, the insufficient sample, which constituted almost half of the causes of preanalytical errors, was in the first place, followed by the clotted and inappropriate sample. It is seen that similar reasons take the first 3 places in the literature, although their locations vary.…”

“…The working group for the preanalytical phase of the European Union has been carrying out many projects since 2013, such as harmonizing the definition of fasting status, identification of patients and blood tubes, color coding of blood collection tubes, and sequencing and development of tubes during blood collection 18 . In Turkey, laboratories are periodically inspected by the Ministry of Health in line with the Quality Standards and Hospital Efficiency On-site Evaluation Guide prepared by the ministry 19 …”

“…As in most of the laboratories in Turkey, our laboratory also follows the recommendations published by the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Turkey for the purpose of SRR evaluation (32). Out of such criteria, the most frequently encountered 10 criteria for sample rejection as applicable to BGA evaluation were listed below: ).…”
