The use of self-gripping (Progrip™) mesh during laparoscopic total extraperitoneal (TEP) inguinal hernia repair: a prospective feasibility and long-term outcomes study

Abstract: Self-gripping mesh can be safely used during laparoscopic TEP inguinal hernia repairs; our cohort had a rapid recovery, and at the 1-year follow-up visit, there were no recurrences and no patients reported any chronic pain as defined by a CCS™ > 1.

“…The difference in postoperative narcotic requirement persisted when controlling for the presence of an epidural catheter. Our findings mirror the body of literature on the use of self-adhering mesh in inguinal hernia repair where this mesh has been shown to result in less acute pain, 15,16 without a clear effect on chronic pain. 1723 The reduction in acute pain is very important in ensuring patient satisfaction and limiting patient suffering.…”

“…Some prefer the TEP approach, because it avoids violation of the peritoneum, and others have even used self-gripping meshes along with TEP to completely overcome some of the limitations of TAPP. 5 However, regardless of surgical approach, both techniques typically use 3 laparoscopic incisions to accommodate its working ports.…”

“…Los estudios en hernioplastias abiertas que han utilizado estas mallas «autoadhesivas» evidenciaron un ahorro en el tiempo quirúrgico, pero, contrariamente a lo esperado, no se documentó una disminución significativa en el dolor posoperatorio [40][41][42][43] . Las series en hernioplastias laparoscópicas y endoscópicas son aún muy tempranas y cuentan con un número pequeño de pacientes.…”
