The Use of the Coenzyme Q10 as a Food Supplement in the Management of Fibromyalgia: A Critical Review

Abstract: The coenzyme Q10 is a naturally occurring benzoquinone derivative widely prescribed as a food supplement for different physical conditions and pathologies. This review aims to sum up the key structural and functional characteristics of Q10, taking stock of its use in people affected by fibromyalgia. A thorough survey has been conducted, using Pubmed, Scifinder, and ClinicalTrials.gov as the reference research applications and registry database, respectively. Original articles, reviews, and editorials published… Show more

“…For example, supplementation with CoQ10 has shown promise in alleviating symptoms in some PVFS patients. However, further research is crucial to unravel the complexities of this connection, to develop targeted interventions to improve the quality of life for these individuals, and to explore the effectiveness and safety of such interventions [ 56 , 57 , 58 , 59 , 60 , 61 , 62 , 63 , 64 ]. The rationale for CoQ10 supplementation with regard to mitochondrial hijacking is considered in the following section.…”

“…Animal hearts and livers, which contain 30-200 mg/kg of Co Q10 due to their concentration in high energy-demanding tissues, are the best sources of this bioactive chemical. CoQ10 has no set dietary reference value; nevertheless, the average daily consumption for men and women is 5.4 mg and 3.8 mg, respectively [13]. But as a non-essential nutrient, it is thought to be produced mostly by endogenous synthesis.…”

“…CoQ10 has two forms: the oxidized form and the reduced, active form. This reduced form is widely used in the adjunctive treatment of cardiovascular diseases, nutritional health products, and food additives ( 20 ). Notably, CoQ10 plays a key role in myocardial hypoxia, significantly boosting heart health.…”
