The use of ultrasound in endemic Burkitt lymphoma in Cameroon

Abstract: We demonstrate that US provides more accurate staging of eBL than clinical examination. Abdominal involvement is more common than previously reported and appears to be as frequent as disease of the jaw at presentation. Further study should determine if more accurate staging with US is useful in risk-stratifying treatment.

“…It would be of value to determine whether a simple objective test, such as the serum lactate dehydrogenase level, which is associated with total tumour burden, would add to this clinical separation (Magrath et al , ; Arthur et al , ). If this were the case, even simple imaging studies, such as abdominal ultrasound (Marjerrison et al , ) would be unnecessary, avoiding further delays and the cost associated with the performance of imaging studies in Africa, where patients are many, and equipment and health professionals in short supply.…”

“…BL usually grows faster than the other tumors mentioned in the differential diagnosis. Abdominal masses on USS are hypoechoic in appearance, and the scan may reveal clinically unsuspected tumor 7. A FNA of the tumor is the standard diagnostic procedure in this setting 8.…”
