The Use of Visual Analogue Scale Score as a Predicting Tool in Differentiating Renal Colic From Lumbar Back Pain

Abstract: Introduction Renal colic is often confused with low back pain (LBP) and other pathologies. Computed tomography (CT) is frequently used to reach a definitive diagnosis, but its use increases the exposure to radiation. Researchers have tried to predict urinary stones in patients presenting with flank pain. Several scoring systems have been introduced; however, none of them provide a prediction based on the physical examination of the patient upon initial presentation to the outpatient clinic. In this … Show more

“…Analgesia and sedation are important indicators during anesthesia, and PI and BIS are reliable indicators of intraoperative analgesia and sedation [17,18] . The VAS score is a common tool for evaluating pain intensity; typically, a VAS score of less than 4 signi es slight pain [19,20] . We combined the PI and BIS to guide the dose of sedatives and analgesics during surgery, and various VAS scores were used to assess postoperative pain.…”

“…As a result of changing dietary habits and living conditions, the prevalence of urinary stones is increasing steadily, and it affects a broader proportion of the population [1]. A signi cant number of emergency department (ED) visits are related to this medical condition mostly due to severe pain it causes [2,3]. The comprehensive approach of emergency medicine cannot ignore the diagnostic process in patients presenting to the ED with renal colic, despite pain palliation being one of its rst goals [4].…”
