The Utility of 2-Deoxy-2-[F-18]fluoro-d-glucose Positron Emission Tomography in the Investigation of Patients with Disseminated Carcinoma of Unknown Primary Origin

Abstract: PET contributed to the management of previously extensively investigated patients with CUP. Identification of a PPS and/or change in management was documented in 38% of cases, the majority of which were lung or pancreatic cancer. These findings are worthy of evaluation in a prospective study.

“…Another explanation is that the primary lesion has involuted and is not detectable when the metastasis becomes evident [22,23]. According to the studies of 18 F-FDG PET/CT in CUP, the detection rates of PET/CT were from 24 to 80 percent with large differences between studies [8][9][10][11][12]. Results of this study show the detection rate of 9.6 % which is much lower than the results of previous studies.…”

“…Studies have shown that positron emission tomography/ computed tomography (PET/CT) utilizing 18 F-Fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) is a valuable tool in patients with CUP, but with large difference between studies from 24 to 80 percent of detection rates [8][9][10][11][12].…”

“…The minimally invasive diagnostic procedure, 18 Ffluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography, could prove helpful for the detection of disseminated tumors. 12 Preoperative chemoradiotherapy using GEM has been reported to contribute to the improved survival of patients with pancreatic cancer; 13,14 however, we could not find any other report of successful neoadjuvant chemotherapy with GEM alone making R0 resection of stage IVB pancreatic cancer possible. Our patient's condition has remained satisfactory, and he has been free of symptoms for more than 40 months since the initial treatment.…”
