The Utilization of Gum Tragacanth to Improve the Growth of Rhodotorula aurantiaca and the Production of γ-Decalactone in Large Scale

Abstract: The production of gamma-decalactone and 4-hydroxydecanoic acid by the psychrophilic yeast R. aurantiaca was studied. The effect of both compounds on the growth of R. aurantiaca was also investigated and our results show that gamma-decalactone must be one of the limiting factors for its production. The addition of gum tragacanth to the medium at concentrations of 3 and 4 g/l seems to be an adequate strategy to enhance gamma-decalactone production and to reduce its toxicity towards the cell. The production of ga… Show more

“…25 For example, Vernocchi et al found that the addition of starch may form complexes with GDL, which could contribute as a continuous extraction system for the lactone to reduce the lactone toxicity as free molecule. 26 Similar results were also reported by Alchihab et al 27 As a result, P-S was supposed not only as a dispersant to control the release of RA, but also as an adsorbent for lactone to alleviate the damage of lactone to cells.…”

“…Similar levels of performance can only be found in patents [74]. Subsequently, gum was added to the process in order to increase titers and to diminished the toxicity of γ-decalactone, but with limited success [75].…”

“…Moreover, long-chain fatty-acyl-CoA oxidase activities of G3-3.21 have been found much higher than that of CGMCC 2.1405. However, the maximum GDL yield obtained with Y. lipolytica G3-3.21 was less than that obtained with Rhodotorula aurantiaca reported by Alchihab et al [5]. The decreased yield of GDL might be due to the lower expression of the enzyme and rapid in vitro loss of enzymatic activities [6].…”
