The Utrecht-Management of Identity Commitments Scale (U-MICS)

Abstract: Abstract. The Utrecht-Management of Identity Commitments Scale (U-MICS; Crocetti, Rubini, & Meeus, 2008 ) is a recently developed measure of identity that has been shown to be a reliable tool for assessing identity processes in adolescents. This study examines psychometric properties of the U-MICS in a large adolescent sample from seven European countries focused on the interplay of commitment, in-depth exploration, and reconsideration of commitment. Participants were 1,007 adolescents from Bulgaria (n = 1… Show more

“…The goal of validation of the U-MICS identity scale in its educational and relational domain, proposed by Meeus (2001, Unpublished), has been accomplished. Thus, it is possible to have this instrument validated in Spanish and added to the list of other languages, to which the scale has been translated ( Crocetti et al, 2008 , 2010 , 2015 ; Dimitrova et al, 2015 ). This article facilitated application of the U-MICS to a wide geographic and population area in order to continue the studies on identity.…”

“…The U-MICS evaluates the three dimensions: the commitments, the in-depth exploration and the reconsideration of the commitments. This instrument has been validated with the structure of three factors in different countries, in their respective languages, the Netherlands ( Crocetti et al, 2008 ), Italy ( Crocetti et al, 2010 ), Romania ( Negru and Crocetti, 2010 ), Switzerland ( Zimmermann et al, 2012 ), Turkey ( Morsunbul et al, 2014 ), Poland ( Karaś et al, 2015 ), Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Kosovo, Slovenia ( Dimitrova et al, 2015 ), Portugal, China, Japan, and Taiwan ( Crocetti et al, 2015 ).…”

“…Marcia (2001) noted that the domains researchers elect to measure are not particularly important, providing they are important; that is, they must be in a life area meaningful to respondents. As with previous studies which used U-MICS to determine adolescent identity (e.g., Dimitrova et al, 2016;Morsunbul et al, 2014), participants' opinions regarding their education (ideological) and friendships (relational) were measured. U-MICS consists of 13 five-point Likert scale questions (1 = completely untrue, 5 = completely true) -five concerning commitment ("My education gives me security in life"), five assessing in-depth exploration ("I try to find out a lot about my education"), and three measuring reconsideration of commitment ("I often think that it would be better to try to find a different education").…”

“…Measurement invariance refers to examining the psychometric properties of a scale across time (longitudinal measurement invariance) and/ or across groups (Van de Schoot et al, 2012). Several studies have tested and supported measurement invariance across gender and ethnic groups, using many language versions of the U-MICS (Crocetti et al, 2015;Dimitrova et al, 2016;Morsunbul et al, 2014). Fewer studies have examined longitudinal invariance of the U-MICS, but those studies also supported invariance across days, weeks, and years (Becht et al, 2016;Hatano et al, 2020).…”
