The validation of the Utrecht work engagement scale for emergency medical technicians in Gauteng

Abstract: The objectives of this study were to validate the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES) for emergency medical technicians in the Gauteng Province of South Africa and to determine its construct equivalence and bias for different language groups. A cross-sectional survey design was used with a convenient sample (N = 318) of emergency medical technicians in Gauteng. The UWES and a biographical questionnaire were administered. A two-factor model of work engagement, consisting of Vigour/Dedication and Absorption was… Show more

“…Although the three-factor structure was also confirmed in a South African study (Barkhuizen & Rothmann, 2006), another study reported that the internal consistency of absorption was not acceptable (Naudé & Rothmann, 2004). This is consistent with arguments that vigour and dedication can be considered the core constructs of work engagement Schaufeli et al, 2002).…”

“…Within the South African context, one study confirmed a three-factor solution (i.e. Storm & Rothmann, 2003) for the UWES, whereas Naudé and Rothmann (2004) obtained a two-factor structure in their study. In a sample of South African police officers, Storm and Rothmann (2003) obtained the following alpha coefficients for the two subscales: Vigour: 0,78 and Dedication: 0,89.…”

“…Applied to the South African context, one study confirmed a three-factor structure (i.e. Storm & Rothmann, 2003) for the UWES, whereas one study obtained a two-factor structure (Naudé & Rothmann, 2004). Furthermore, internal consistencies seem promising -at least for the vigour and dedication scales.…”

“…There has been limited research regarding the potency of absorption, dedication, and vigor attributes in both non-educational [e.g., 36,[37][38][39] and educational [e.g., 35,40,41,42] settings. In relation to educational contexts, in particular, researchers have focused on a number of related objectives.…”
