The Validity and Reliability of a Psychiatric Nurses' Image Scale (PSYNIS)

Purpose: This study was conducted to identify the effects of empathy, communication ability and attitude toward mental illness on psychiatric nurses' image for nursing students. Methods: Participants were 349 nursing students from two universities in G metropolitan city. A survey was conducted from June 10 to 30, 2016, using a self-report questionnaire. Data were analyzed using t-test, one way ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficients and multiple regression with SPSS/WIN 20.0. Results: The level of psychiatric nurses' image for nursing students was 4.03±0.46. Models including the variables, empathy, communication ability and attitude toward mental illness explained 30.0% of the variance in the image of psychiatric nurses. Attitude toward mental illness was the most influential factor (β=.28, p<.001). Conclusion: Based on the outcomes of this study, steps should be taken to design intervention programs that emphasize a positive image of psychiatric nurses for nursing students.

Impact of Self-leadership and Organizational Commitment on the Intention of Psychiatric Mental Health Nurses to Remain in the Profession

Purpose: This study was performed to identify the impact of self-leadership and organizational commitment on intention among psychiatric mental health nurses to remain in the profession. Methods: For this descriptive correlational study, participants were 177 psychiatric mental health nurses with more .than 3 months of psychiatric mental health experience, working in one of eight hospitals in four areas. Data were collected from December 21, 2015 to February 22, 2016 using self-report questionnaires and were analyzed using t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and stepwise multiple regression with IBM SPSS 19.0. Results: Self-leadership and organizational commitment correlated positively with intention to remain. According to the analysis of the impact of self-leadership and organizational commitment on intention to remain, organizational commitment was the most significant predictor variable. Conclusion: Study findings suggest that improvement in the organizational commitment of psychiatric mental health nurses increases their intention remain. It is necessary to come up with a strategy which strengthens organizational commitment in order to improve psychiatric mental health nurses' intention to remain in the profession.

The Mediating Effect of Empowerment on the Relationship between Communication Ability and Nursing Performance in Psychiatric Nurses

The purpose of this study was to investigate the mediating effect of empowerment on the relationship between psychiatric nurses' communication ability and nursing performance. Methods: Relationships among the subjects' communication ability, empowerment, and nursing performance were identified by Pearson's correlation coefficients. The mediating effect of the empowerment between communication ability and nursing performance was analyzed based on the Baron and Kenny approach using multiple regression with the SPSS/WIN 24.0 program. Results: There was a direct relationship between the nurses' communication ability and nursing performance while caring for psychiatric patients. The empowerment had a partial significant mediating effect between communication ability and nursing performance. Conclusion: It is necessary to develop empowering intervention for psychiatric nurses with poor communication ability and low performance.
