The Value of Design Research

Abstract: The increasing complexities of societal problems require the involvement of multiple stakeholders, in both business and governmental processes. A lot of personal ice-breaking exercises, which create empathy amongst stakeholders, have been proposed to improve results of collaborative processes. Next to this, tools have been developed to inform multi-stakeholder collaborating groups about their value network. However, there is lack of methods and tools to facilitate 'professional empathy' among different stakeho… Show more

“…As the design is recognized as a strategic resource, many scholars also investigate the link between design, innovation and competitive advantage (Platt et al , 2001; Borja de Mozota, 2004; Boland and Collopy, 2004; Veryzer, 2005; Dell’Era and Verganti, 2011). Several studies (Dumaine, 1991; Schmitt and Simonson, 1997) demonstrate that consumers increasingly make brand choices based on the aesthetic and symbolic value of products and services.…”

“…Companies can adopt several means to increase the recognition of their products in the market (Magistretti et al , 2019). Design is one of the main vehicles adopted to convey the firm’s identity and tradition as the main ingredient of fostering a strong visual identity for a brand and creating brand value (Schmitt and Simonson, 1997; Stompff, 2003; Borja de Mozota, 2004). Indeed, in the design field, much attention has been paid to the role of designers in mediating and brokering different sources of knowledge (Dell’Era and Verganti, 2010).…”

“…In English it has retained its sense of design. Words, a plan depending on the medium used, project, process or a sketch, model, motive, means visual composition [6]. Hence design; to meet the demands of the audience, and meet the needs of all the plans made to resolve the existing problems, the drawing can be expressed as a whole, modeling and visualization action.…”

“…Furthermore, new frameworks for collaboration are encouraging designers to work as cultural intermediaries between researchers and practitioners in different fields, cutting across disciplinary and methodological boundaries (Sanders 2006). Whilst interdisciplinarity is highly valued and common amongst design practice and research as is the innovative way in which designers work with other researchers in different disciplinessuch as scientists, ergonomists, psychologists, sociologists, to name but a fewthe question of how design research draws value from other subject areas whilst also generating value of its own remains a critical issue of debate for the academic design community (Borja de Mozota, Valentine, and Nelson 2016). Given the rapidly changing context in which design operates, it has become increasingly difficult to clearly assess and articulate the multi-faceted value that design research can generate.…”
