“…Organisations across industries try to extract user data value to leverage – “monetize” – it for commercial gain (Clemons, 2009; Kugler, 2018). Previous studies estimated economic and monetary data value (Carrascal et al , 2011; Malgieri and Custers, 2018; OECD, 2013; van Lieshout, 2015; WEF, 2013). From a resource-based perspective, firms can generate business value (in digital markets) from big (user) data, meaning increased customer retention, revenue from consumers and revenue from advertisers (Fast et al , 2022).…”

“…This is true of personal data, which are invariably cast as a commodity (Schwartz, 2004), asset (Spiekerman & Korunovska, 2017; van Lieshout, 2015), good (Chessa & Loiseau, 2017), property or resource (Gates & Matthews, 2014), “new oil” (Spiekerman & Korunovska, 2017; van Lieshout, 2015) or currency (Gates & Matthews, 2014). Research taking the firm's interest as a point of focus tries to understand the mechanisms by which firms capture the value of personal data by monetizing them, often by exploiting data to learn about customers (van Lieshout, 2015). Research focusing on the individual perspective investigates the customer's perception of the monetary value of their own personal data (Spiekerman & Korunovska, 2017).…”

“…While large companies were capitalizing on consumer data and demands for privacy, personal data markets (e.g., PFP (Paying For Privacy) and PDE (personal data economy) [68]) have been growing. Studies investigating and anticipating personal data markets [62,102,118,163,180] date back to the 1990s. Personal data markets refer to an online destination where customers were compensated for their use of their data [122].…”
