The variations and degenerative changes of sacroiliac joints in asymptomatic adults

Abstract: Background:The sacroiliac joint has a structure in which the direction of the load relative to the articular surface is irrational, as the joint surface is not perpendicular to the trunk load axis; it is likely to incur more degenerative changes than other weight-bearing joints. Materials and methods: This retrospective study consisted of a total of 145 cases -104 (71.7%) men and 41 (28.3%) women -who were referred to Gaziantep University Medical Faculty Radiology Department Polyclinic for pelvic computed tomo… Show more

“…The most frequent variants were iliosacral complex, bipartite iliac bony plate and crescent iliac bony plate (27.7, 27.2% and 27%, respectively). This is in line with the results of Tok [ 6 ] and Cihan [ 7 ]. Other authors found other variants to be the most frequent: accessory joint [ 2 , 4 , 5 ], dysmorphic cartilaginous joint [ 1 , 3 ], or bipartite iliac bony plate [ 9 ].…”

“…We found these variants to be very common in our study group: 82.8% of the investigated joints demonstrated at least one variant. This prevalence is much higher than in previous studies performed with CT and/or MRI, which reported overall incidences of 25.7–57% [ 1 3 , 6 , 7 , 9 ]. The most frequent variants were iliosacral complex, bipartite iliac bony plate and crescent iliac bony plate (27.7, 27.2% and 27%, respectively).…”

“…These variants are sometimes associated with edematous or structural changes suspected to be mechanical in nature. Positive association between anatomical variations and degenerative changes is somewhat controversial (36,37). To the best of the authors' knowledge, only one study has analyzed MRI changes in morphological variants of the SIJ (38).…”
