The Vegetation of the South Shetland Islands and the Climatic Change

Abstract: Antarctica allows at the same time to study the effects of change on the environment with minimal anthropic interference and in the least modified conditions in the world regarding biodiversity and its relations. At the same time, it allows assessing its effects on an ecosystem of few species and with a food web that directly links the oceans to terrestrial organisms. The South Shetland Islands are located further north within Antarctic Maritime and are therefore more vulnerable to climate change. Part of the … Show more

“…S. uncinata is considered the most abundant moss on King George Island (Ochyra 1998). It is a bipolar and alpine species that is widely distributed in Antarctica (Ochyra 1998), where it occurs in a wide variety of habitats including exposed rocky surfaces, wet locations near streams (Nakatsubo & Ohtani 1992), substrates rich in organic matter, on beaches and coastal terraces and close to bird colonies (Putzke & Pereira 2001).…”

“…Admiralty Bay is the largest of the bays on King George Island, with a surface area of 122.08 km 2 and coastline of 83.4 km (Rakusa-Suszczewski 1980a, 1980b, 1987, Marsz & Rakusa-Suszczewski 1987). The degree of shelter provided in the bay results in a very distinct microclimate in comparison with other parts of the island, especially in relation to wind exposure (Smith 1972, Putzke & Pereira 2001).…”

“…Livingston Island harbors a highly diverse terrestrial and lacustrine flora and fauna 51 . Plant species are confined to ice-free areas, and are expanding in regions experiencing greater ice retreat, more favourable temperatures, and the influence of seabird colonies 51 . On Hurd Peninsula, Miers Bluff hosts a Chinstrap penguin colony on its coastal area.…”

“…In spite of the early XX century cooling event, the air temperatures are still increasing in the whole Antarctic continent and mainly in the AP region (e.g., Clem et al, 2020; IPCC, 2019; Turner et al, 2016), impacting sea temperature (e.g., Auger et al, 2021; Kejna et al, 2013; Meredith & King, 2005; Turner et al, 2013), glacier mass balance (e.g., Abram et al, 2013; Engel et al, 2018; Molina et al, 2007; Navarro et al, 2013), terrestrial biology (e.g., Convey & Smith, 2009; Putzke & Pereira, 2020; Sancho et al, 2017; Snyder & Callaham, 2019), edafology (e.g., González‐Guzmán et al, 2017), and ground thermal regime (e.g., Bockheim et al, 2013; Vieira et al, 2010). Changes in the ground thermal regime have also been shown to impact the geomorphological dynamics in the ice‐free areas of the AP (e.g., Oliva & Ruiz‐Fernández, 2015, 2017).…”
