“…For this reason, educational reforms in 1996 included the concept of intercultural education and since 2003, the principles and aims of intercultural education have been incorporated into the 'inter-thematic curriculum framework' (Govaris and Kaldi 2011). However, Greek schools are still assimilative in character and do not incorporate a cultural exchange of ideas (Paleologou 2004;Sakka 2009). Professionals in Europe who work in the field of education tend to lack tools that would allow them to detect different forms of ethnic prejudice at an early stage and thus be able to take preventive and educational steps to support efforts promoting interculturalism (Fernández-Castillo 2008).…”

“…One country that has been especially affected by migration is Greece and over the last decades Greece has undergone a considerable demographic, economic and sociopolitical (Nikolaou, 2000) change. Since 1990, the minorities that migrated to Greece were mainly from the former communist countries of Eastern Europe, the Balkans, Africa, and Asia (Sakka, 2009). However, Greece and the Greek society were unprepared for receiving this large influx of new ethnic groups and their arrival has led to numerous challenges.…”
