The Viscosity and Combustion Characteristics of Single-Droplet Water-Diesel Emulsion

Abstract: Diesel fuel exhibits excellent combustion characteristics and stability. However, diesel use is becoming restricted because of its associated environmental problems. Fuel emulsification, which increases efficiency and reduces pollution, became the solution of environmental problem. In this study, five water:diesel emulsions with mass ratios (0.3, 0.6, 1.0, 1.2, and 1.5) via ultrasonication were synthesized with and without surfactant. The optimal water:diesel ratio (=1:1) of an emulsion containing the surfacta… Show more

“…Fuel with a higher viscosity will increase the problem of the atomization process and risk damaging the fuel injector. So that it will result in incomplete combustion and reduced engine performance and cause engine damage due to the deposition of solid particles that cannot be burned [13] [14]. The addition of bio additives which results in a decrease in the viscosity value allows the quality of the fogging to be maximized so that the combustion that occurs will be more complete.…”

“…In addition to the above results, the CR spectral behavior at the various emulsion compositions can be summarized from the spectra using several statistical parameters; from which, necessary comparisons/inferences can be made. In this study, spectral centroid (µ 1 ), root mean square frequency (RMSF), spectral skewness (SS), and spectral kurtosis (K f ) were employed and are defined in Equations ( 4)- (7), respectively.…”

“…Quite unconventionally, this quest to improve fuel quality, reduce emission severity, and minimize costs motivated water emulsification of diesel fuels. Accordingly, these factors also motivated several studies that mostly report experimental investigations of engine performance and exhaust gas emissions under operating conditions of W/D emulsion fuels [6][7][8][9].…”

“…Gel fuel is a type of condensed substance that combines the advantages of solid and liquid fuels [2][3][4]. Research on gel fuels is customarily subdivided into four areas: rheology [5,6], preparation [7,8], transportation and atomization [9] and combustion in rockets and power plants [10,11]. The widespread use of gel fuels in the power industry requires a detailed investigation of the characteristics and patterns of their ignition and combustion processes.…”
