The wechsler memory scale: Preliminary findings toward an australian standardisation

Abstract: The Wechsler Memory Scale is widely used by clinical psychologists in Australia in the assessment of memory functions in patients with suspected organic cerebral impairment. However, the Scale has never been normed on an Australian population, separate sub-test norms are available for only a limited age range, and individual psychologists have made their own adaptations of certain American idioms.Preliminary findings using Form I of the Scale with a sample of 500 subjects suffering from no known memory impairm… Show more

“…WAIS-R Full Scale IQ was estimated from three Verbal and three Performance sub-tests. WMS Logical Memory and Visual Reproduction sub-test scores after a 30-minute delay were converted to scaled scores [40], the mean yielding the delayed recall index. A short (12-item) version of the University of Pennsylvania Smell Test (UPSIT) assessed olfaction [41]: each sample is scratched, sniffed and matched to one of four well known object/odour names.…”

“…Tests of memory included: the Wechsler Memory Scale, Form A, Australian Adaptation (WMS) [32,33]; immediate, interference and 20-minute delay trials of the Rey Auditory-Verbal Learning Test (RAVLT) [34]; and 3-and 20-minute delay trials of the Rey Complex Figure Test (RCFT) [35]. The variables entered were MQ, RAVLT gains [trial 5 -trial I] and RAVLT per cent retention (no.…”

“…While Ryan,Moms, YafYa, and Peterson (1981) andIvison (1984) have provided test-retest stability data for Form 1 of the Wechsler Memory Scale, there have been no previous studies of the stability of Form 2 of the Wechsler Memory Scale(Wech- sler & Stone, 1974).Because of the different factors tapped by the different subtests (e.g.…”

In order to assess the test-retest stability of the scale, sufficient time must be allowed between the two administrations to allow for the novel material to be novel again the second time.…”
