The Weiss Functional Impairment Rating Scale-Parent Form for assessing ADHD: evaluating diagnostic accuracy and determining optimal thresholds using ROC analysis

Abstract: PurposeThe Weiss Functional Impairment Rating Scale-Parent Form (WFIRS-P) is a 50-item scale that assesses functional impairment on six clinically relevant domains typically affected in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). As functional impairment is central to ADHD, the WFIRS-P offers potential as a tool for assessing functional impairment in ADHD. These analyses were designed to examine the overall performance of WFIRS-P in differentiating ADHD and non-ADHD cases using receiver operating characte… Show more

“…Based on the descriptive findings of this study, the mean total score of the WFIRS-P was 0.27 which means that the majority of parents see their children as having mimimal difficulty. This finding was not unexpected in a normal sample of children and is consistent with previous studies on the WFIRS-P [ 11 , 19 ] and one study on the WFIRS-S [ 7 ]. In Thompson et al’s study [ 19 ] in an ADHD group and a non-ADHD control group, the mean total score of the WFIRS-P was 0.37 in the control group and in Tarakçıoğlu et al’s study [ 11 ] in a sample of children with ADHD and healthy children, the mean total score of the scale was 0.15 in healthy group.…”

“…This can be considered a reasonable and empirically derived definition of a clinically significant improvement. The receiver operating characteristics that differentiate patients with ADHD from community controls with the optimal area under the curve is a mean score of 0.65 (Thompson et al 2017 ). Since this represents a value that places the patient in a domain of functional impairment no different from the population without ADHD, it is a reasonable and empirically derived definition of functional remission.…”

“…WFIRS-P was a rating scale for evaluating social function of children with ADHD. 23 , 24 The WFIRS-P contained 50 items organized into the functional domains of Family, Child’s Self-Concept, Learning & School, Social Activities, Life Skills, and Risky Activities, with possible responses to items using a four-point Likert scale (0=Never or not at all, 3=Very often or very much). In each subscale, two or more item scores ≥2, one item score of 3, or a mean score >1.5 would indicate impairment.…”
