BackgroundResearch in depression has progressed rapidly over the past four decades. Yet depression rates are not subsiding and treatment success is not improving. We examine the extent to which the gap between science and practice is associated with the level of integration in how depression is considered in research and stakeholder-relevant documents.MethodsWe used a network-science perspective to analyze similar uses of depression relevant terms in the Google News corpus (approximately 1 billion words) and the Web of Science database (120 000 documents).ResultsThese analyses yielded consistent pictures of insular modules associated with: (1) patient/providers, (2) academics, and (3) industry. Within academia insular modules associated with psychology, general medical, and psychiatry/neuroscience/biology were also detected.ConclusionsThese analyses suggest that the domain of depression is fragmented, and that advancements of relevance to one stakeholder group (academics, industry, or patients) may not translate to the others. We consider potential causes and associated responses to this fragmentation that could help to unify and advance translation from research on depression to the clinic, largely involving harmonizing employed language, bridging conceptual domains, and increasing communication across stakeholder groups.

The model of the physician who uses research to try to solve the mystery of the disease has existed throughout the ages, starting from the era of Hippocrates, through the Middle Ages, and up to the present day. The terms "physician-scientist," "clinical-scientist," and "clinician-scientist" have all been used to refer to medical practitioner who works in a position between clinical practice and research. Due to their knowledge of both science and medicine, physician-scientists are able to pose clinically pertinent research questions and integrate scientific inquiry into patient care. They provide a distinct viewpoint to biomedical research. Basic science principles are a prerequisite for physician-scientists. Translational medicine is a two-way concept that includes both bench-to-bedside factors, which work to improve the speed at which new therapeutic strategies developed through basic research are tested in clinical settings, and bedside-to-bench factors, which offer feedback on how new treatments are being used and how they can be made better. The institutional divide between the clinic and the lab is where physician-scientists are expected to stand, with one foot in each. They serve as a bridge between the two different worlds, where differences in language and training can make communication challenging. Physician-scientists act as catalysts for translational research. Physician-scientists collaborations enhance patient care, advance medical education, and improve the biomedical industry's profitability.

Introdução: A fenilcetonúria é caracterizada pela mutação da enzima fenilalanina hidroxilase, que metaboliza a fenilalanina, um aminoácido presente em quase todos os alimentos. A perda da atividade dessa enzima resulta em um aumento da concentração de fenilalanina, em níveis tóxicos. O tratamento padrão para esse quadro compreende principalmente duas estratégias: a dieta restrita em fenilalanina o uso de fórmula metabólica rica em aminoácidos, porém isenta de fenilalanina. Objetivo: No Brasil existem protocolos para garantia da segurança alimentar e nutricional em escolares com condições específicas, mas aqueles portadores de fenilcetonúria não são contemplados. A alimentação desse grupo é de alto custo e para garantia do consumo adequado de nutrientes pode ser necessária apoio governamental, principalmente para aquelas famílias em situação de vulnerabilidade social. O objetivo do trabalho é propor um protocolo, através da pesquisa translacional, que garanta a segurança alimentar e nutricional de estudantes com fenilcetonúria nas escolas públicas do Distrito Federal (DF), podendo servir como base para a criação de um protocolo nacional. Métodos: O trabalho revisou as políticas existentes por meio de buscas em bases de dados (PubMed, BVS e Embase) e em sites governamentais. O protocolo sugerido foi criado a partir de uma nova abordagem e adaptação de protocolos já em andamento, o que torna viável sua implementação. Conclusão: O protocolo é de extrema importância para o manejo adequado dessa população e irá assegurar a ingestão necessária de aminoácidos para que ocorra o pleno desenvolvimento fisiológico e cognitivo dos estudantes com fenilcetonúria.
