The “Who” in Engineering: Sociotechnical Engineering as Memorable and Relevant

Abstract: Does emphasizing the role of people in engineering influence the memorability of engineering content? This study is part of a larger project through which our team developed a new undergraduate energy course to better reflect students’ cultures and lived experiences through asset-based pedagogies to help students develop a sociotechnical mindset in engineering problem solving. In this study, students in the class were invited to participate in semi-structured interviews (n=5) to explore our effectiveness in he… Show more

“…We recommend that engineering educators not only contextualize and integrate considerations for how different members of society would benefit (or not) from the projects they assign but also explicitly reward students (e.g., make it a component of their grade) for engaging in such exercises. Furthermore, integrating sociotechnical aspects of engineering into course material will not only align more with student values but also make engineering content more memorable [39].…”

“…Raising students' awareness of the social dimension of engineering and the role engineers play in helping people can also enhance student engagement and retention [14,71]. In particular, women and students from other underrepresented minority groups, who have been shown to leave in disproportionate numbers following the first-year prerequisite engineering courses [72], have demonstrated a greater sensitivity to the broader societal context of engineering design.…”

“…Today's world and work environment are becoming more diverse and complex. Calls have been made for engineering graduates to have more holistic skill sets beyond technical knowledge [1,2] so they can sustainably, equally, ethically, and justly Investigating Canadian Engineering Students' Perceptions of Graduate Attributes: Frequency, Criticality, and Relative Importance contribute to the economy and address many of the wicked problems facing our societies today [3][4][5]. Additionally, engineers inherently need to integrate and utilize diverse types of knowledge to solve these complex problems and "meet people's needs and wants" [6,7].…”
