The wide field monitor onboard the Chinese-European x-ray mission eXTP

Abstract: The eXTP (enhanced X-ray Timing and Polarimetry) mission is a major project of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), with a large involvement of Europe. The scientific payload of eXTP includes four instruments: the SFA (Spectroscopy Focusing Array) and the PFA (Polarimetry Focusing Array) -led by China -the LAD (Large Area Detector) and the WFM (Wide Field Monitor) -led by Europe (Italy and Spain). They offer a unique simultaneous wide-band X-ray timing and polarimetry sensitivity. The WFM is a wide field X-r… Show more

“…Italy, under the coordination of the ASI, holds the PI-ship of the Large Area Detectors (LAD) and contributes to the three Wide Field Monitors (WFM) (see Figure 6). In the framework of a European contribution, currently not confirmed, the scientific payload of the mission consists of the following: The technological breakthrough of eXTP detection instrument relies on LAD [38] and WFM [39] large-area SDDs (derived form those of the ALICE experiment at CERN and optimized for space) and capillary plate collimators, able to guarantee high efficiency in few mm thickness and reduced weight with respect to proportional counters and mechanical collimators used in the past generation of large-area instruments.…”

“…It exhibits sensitivity in the energy range from 2 to 8 keV with a total effective area of 300 cm 2 at 3 keV. The Wide-Field Monitor (WFM) is a coded-aperture instrument with a total field of view of 90°× 180°, tasked with the monitoring of the X-ray sky and identification of transient sources in the 2-50 keV energy range [3].…”

“…An update on the details of the instrument and its scientific capability will be presented within these proceedings. 6 The processing hardware (see §2) resides in the Instrument Control Unit (ICU) of the WFM. The ICU (actually two units in cold redundancy) is located inside the spacecraft platform cabin (service module).…”
