The Wide Range of Antibiotic Resistance and Variability of Genotypic Profiles in Escherichia coli from Domestic Animals in Eastern Sicily

Abstract: The emergence of multidrug resistance among Enterobacteriaceae in livestock poses a serious public health threat. Escherichia coli, a usual host of intestinal microbiota, is recognized also as etiological agent of numerous infections widespread in both humans and animals. The colibacillosis is one of the most reported zoonoses worldwide, typically treated with antibiotics in the primary stages. This strategy has promoted the onset of antibiotic-resistant serotypes of E. coli, reducing the effectiveness of ther… Show more

“…However, the overuse and misuse of antifungal agents have contributed to the development of AFR [37] [39] [41] [42] [43]. Antifungal agents are overused or misused in humans [44] [45], animals [46], agriculture [47] [48], and other environmental sectors [49]. This overuse and misuse have contributed to the occurrence of AFR in the One Health ecosystem [50] [51].…”

“…Often, SCK-positive milk samples are associated with an elevate value of somatic cell count (SCC) ( 8 ). In addition, during the preclinical stage of ketosis, the risk of contracting other metabolic disorders and even other pathologies, increases due to an impairment of the immune functions ( 9 , 10 ). Therefore, the monitoring of postpartum SCK is essential to decrease the risk of clinical ketosis and related problems.…”

“…These two species are associated with a wide range of infections such as pneumonia, urinary tract infections, septicemia, and soft tissue infections in humans (Ghosh et al, 2019). They also cause infections in cats, dogs, birds, horses, monkeys, pigs, rats, elephants, and poultry (Mobasseri et al, 2019;Russo et al, 2021). Specifically E. coli infections in chicken viz airsacculitis, cellulitis, pericarditis, perihepatitis, and respiratory distress, are critical production-limiting disease for the poultry industry (Ghosh et al, 2019).…”
