The WiggleZ Dark Energy Survey: improved distance measurements to z = 1 with reconstruction of the baryonic acoustic feature

Abstract: We present significant improvements in cosmic distance measurements from the Wig-gleZ Dark Energy Survey, achieved by applying the reconstruction of the baryonic acoustic feature technique. We show using both data and simulations that the reconstruction technique can often be effective despite patchiness of the survey, significant edge effects and shot-noise. We investigate three redshift bins in the redshift range 0.2 < z < 1, and in all three find improvement after reconstruction in the detection of the bary… Show more

“…We also compare our results to the current precise measurements, such as the results from Planck+WMAP (Planck Collaboration XVI 2013), BAO (Beutler et al 2011;Anderson et al 2014;Kazin et al 2014;Ross et al 2015), and SNe Ia (Conley et al 2011;Suzuki et al 2012). We show them in Table 3.…”

“…For the BAO data, we use the isotropic BAO estimator rs(z d )/DV (z) of 6dFGS at an effective redshift z 6dF GS = 0.106 (Beutler et al 2011) and SDSS MGS at zMGS = 0.15 (Ross et al 2015), and WiggleZ at z W iggleZ = 0.44, 0.6, 0.73 (Kazin et al 2014). We take into account the correlations among the WiggleZ data points.…”

“…The distance priors were subtracted by Huang, Wang & Wang (2015) with the Planck CMB data released in 2015. The BAO data include 6dFGS (Beutler et al 2011), SDSS MGS (Ross et al 2015), and WiggleZ (Kazin et al 2014). The LSS data include the anisotropic clustering of LOWZ and CMASS galaxies (Gil-Marin et al 2016).…”

“…As described by Kazin et al (2014) we produced a halo catalogue by applying a friends-of-friends algorithm to the dark matter particles, and populated the haloes with mock galaxies using a Halo Occupation Distribution such that the projected clustering matched that of the WiggleZ galaxies. The mocks were sub-sampled using the selection function of each region, and galaxy co-ordinates converted to redshift-space.…”

“…To constrain the expansion history we use the following BAO measurements: WiggleZ reconstructed from Kazin et al (2014), reconstructed DR11-CMASS and DR11-LOWZ from Anderson et al (2014), and the 6dFGS measurement from Beutler et al (2011). By 'reconstructed' we are referring to the process of sharpening the acoustic peak by using information from the local density field (cf.…”
