The work compatibility improvement framework: an integrated perspective of the human-at-work system

Abstract: The industrial revolution demonstrated the limitations of a pure mechanistic approach towards work design. Human work is now seen as a complex entity that involves different scientific branches and blurs the line between mental and physical activities. Job design has been a traditional concern of applied psychology, which has provided insight into the interaction between the individual and the work environment. The goal of this paper is to introduce the human-at-work system as a holistic approach to organizati… Show more

“…It falls within an integrated prevention framework and reinforces the idea that only a holistic approach to the man-at-work model will achieve an optimum organizational performance level. [41] Discussions with the manufacturers we met also involved the formalism of the tables used. Two options are in fact feasible: either separating the two tables or merging them by creating two lines for each process stage (one for quality aspects, the other for work situation aspects).…”

“…This is the only means of knowing and predicting mental workload levels (perceived by workers) associated with a particular task and not only the task load (which by definition is objective). As the stress-strain relation is mediated by individual factors (ISO 10075), only by taking individual ability into account can company directors distribute workloads correctly among their workers in order to avoid the emergence of frustration, anxiety, stress and their detrimental effects on workers' health (Genaidy, Salem, Karwowski, Paez and Tuncel, 2007). Therefore, to ensure optimal matching of job and worker, and to achieve adequate levels of safety and performance, the effect of individual differences, together with the demands of the job and the characteristics of the task, must be considered (Szalma, 2008).…”

“…The worker interacts with the work environment when conducting their tasks or job. Interaction between these two elements (worker -work environment) requires proper planning; that is why job design is used to identify the suitable conditions for the worker to work in best condition and environment [8]. The interaction between workers -work environment is critical especially in transportation industry.…”
