The workers' perspective: emotional consequences during a lean manufacturing change based on VSM analysis

Abstract: PurposeThe purpose of this study is to identify the perception of workers before, during and after the implementation of changes derived from the lean manufacturing (LM) technique called value stream mapping (VSM) analysis and the causes that lead to this perception.Design/methodology/approachA qualitative methodological research design was adopted, using individual transcribed and coded interviews as the primary method of data collection.FindingsAt the beginning of the VSM changes, this study found strong den… Show more

“…Others have highlighted the risk of worker resistance as a threat to be considered for any lean manufacturing implementation effort [14]. Addressing workers' fear of new methods or procedures taking over their jobs will be an issue when planning for improvement and innovation in a manufacturing environment [15,16]. There have been indications that workers may fear that lean manufacturing implementation may lead to job losses, and therefore they may resist any changes required [17].…”

“…In other words, PBC is ultimately the individual's beliefs about the situational and internal factors that assist or hinder their ability to perform the behavior. Understanding of the challenge of lean manufacturing processes and self-confidence in handling the changes have a direct impact on the acceptance of lean manufacturing by workers [16]. The complexities and challenges could encourage deeper learning for the participants [79].…”

“…Value Stream Management (VSM) is a simple, yet powerful and logical tool that allows an organization to identify wasted resources along the production stream [35]. It allows to analyze the current state and make a forecast for the future state.…”

“…The Japanese word KAIZEN stands for two levels: Kai for change and Zen for better, so Kaizen means "continuous improvement"; the KAIZEN approach is based on three pillars that are best suited for continuous improvement management, involving every process, function, and person in the company" (Kumar, Dhingra & Singh, 2018, Choudhary, Nayak, Dora, Mishra & Ghadge, 2019. Castillo (2022) states that the Lean production system (LPS) needs a tool called Value Stream Mapping VSM to evaluate its effectiveness in improving sustainable performance. There is an opportunity to use VSM to identify improvement points for waste and problems (Castillo, 2022).…”
