The worldwide NORM production and a fully automated gamma-ray spectrometer for their characterization

Abstract: Materials containing radionuclides of natural\ud origin and being subject to regulation because of their\ud radioactivity are known as Naturally Occurring Radioactive\ud Material (NORM). By following International Atomic\ud Energy Agency, we include in NORM those materials with\ud an activity concentration, which is modified by human\ud made processes. We present a brief review of the main\ud categories of non-nuclear industries together with the levels of activity concentration in feed raw materials,\ud produc… Show more

“…Each target was irradiated at a different beam energy and the duration of the irradiation was decided according to the beam energy and expected cross section. Once the irradiation was completed, the 7 Be activity in the targets and in the catchers was measured at the low-background γ counting facility of LNL [19]. The counting facility consists of two HPGe detectors of 80% relative efficiency facing each other.…”

“…The eU abundances in the rock samples collected from fresh outcrops were measured using the MCARad system, a gamma-ray spectrometer equipped with two HPGe p-type detectors having a 60% relative coaxial efficiency and an energy resolution of approximately 1.9 keV at 1332.5 keV ( 60 Co) (Xhixha et al, 2013). The MCA-Rad system is shielded with a 10 cm thickness of copper and 10 cm thickness of lead so reducing the laboratory background by approximately two orders of magnitude.…”
