The XMM Cluster Survey: X-ray analysis methodology

Abstract: The XMM Cluster Survey (XCS) is a serendipitous search for galaxy clusters using all publicly available data in the XMM-Newton Science Archive. Its main aims are to measure cosmological parameters and trace the evolution of X-ray scaling relations. In this paper we describe the data processing methodology applied to the 5776 XMM observations used to construct the current XCS source catalogue. A total of 3675 > 4σ cluster candidates with >50 background-subtracted X-ray counts are extracted from a total non-over… Show more

“…The largest published catalogue of X-ray clusters so far, based on the entire XMM-Newton archive, was compiled by the XMM Cluster Survey team (XCS, Romer et al 2001;Lloyd-Davies et al 2011;Mehrtens et al 2012). The catalogue consists of 503 optically confirmed clusters.…”

“…The same profile was used to determine a scaling factor between the aperture luminosity and L 500 (Lloyd-Davies et al 2011). Our procedure of the extrapolation is described above and is discussed in more detail in Paper I.…”

“…This led to generating a plethora of RASS X-ray catalogues (e.g. Ebeling et al 2000;Böhringer et al 2000;Reiprich & Böhringer 2002, and many others), which have since been complemented both by targeted Pacaud et al (2007) and serendipitous (Barkhouse et al 2006;Lloyd-Davies et al 2011;Clerc et al 2012b;Takey et al 2013) cluster searches with the XMM-Newton or Chandra observatory. At the same time, the advent of multi-band photometric data has led to dramatic improvements in optical cluster finding and an explosion of algorithms (e.g.…”
