Thelaziasis: report of two cases.

Abstract: abnormal vessels which form an integral part of the lesion forming a 'haemangioneurofibroma'. Such pathology could explain the profuse bleeding encountered when excising this lesion. Malignant conversion to a sarcoma has been described in plexiform neurofibromas but these have been in children with the other signs of neurofibromatosis.4 Our patient will be reviewed indefinitely because the neurofibroma may recur, although the full syndrome of von Recklinghausen's neurofibromatosis is unlikely to develop at thi… Show more

“…The main reservoirs for human thelaziosis seem to be dogs, since they often live in areas populated by a large entomo-fauna [1], [46]. T. callipaeda is usually prevalent in dogs, cats and humans in disadvantaged, rural areas of the former Soviet Union [47] and the Asian continent, including China [48], India [49], Indonesia [50], Japan [51], Korea [52], Taiwan [53] and Thailand [54], [55]. More recently, T. callipaeda has also been reported in Europe, with a high prevalence (60%) in dogs being recorded in some areas of Southern Italy [56].…”

“…This is the third documented case from Manipur, India; the patient had most likely acquired the infection from the dog and his poor hygiene may have been the predisposing factor. [5] The occurrence of Thelazia infestation in Manipur as well as the whole of Northeast India might be more than what is present in the record, and may be underreported. The reasons for these are that the patients do not seek medical treatment in most of the occasions as spontaneous exit of the worms usually cures the disease, and the lack of awareness of the problem among the medical fraternity.…”

“…[4] Subsequently, about eight cases were reported by various authors from Manipur, Assam, Himachal Pradesh, and Karnataka. [5][6][7][8][9] Most of the cases reported from China, Japan, India, Russia, Thailand, and Korea, including the present case, were extraocular. However, Zakir et al documented intraocular thelaziasis of the vitreous.…”

“…Maximum number of cases have been reported from the Northeastern part of the country, that is, seven cases, four from Assam and three from Manipur. [ 1 10 11 12 13 ] This could be attributed to the tropical climate with hilly terrain and longer monsoon period, which is favorable for the growth of arthropods, and subsequently, the vector-borne diseases. [ 14 ]…”
