Thematic Apperception Test method for the differentiation of families of schizophrenics, delinquents, and "normals."

Abstract: The dimension of parent-child interactional behavior was assessed from 240 TAT stories told by parents of 10 schizophrenics (S), 10 delinquents (D), and 10 "normals" (N). A modified content analysis was applied to stories dealing with parent-child plots. Common underlying factors contributing to similar story qualities were abstracted into higher order classes of story behavior. Three modal behavior categories were defined: personally involved, childcentered, flexible interactions (A), impersonally involved, s… Show more

“…Related to the area of interpersonal object relations is the field of family therapy, in which TAT family studies have been contributed by Ferreira and Winter (1965) ;Ferreira, Winter, and Poindexter (1966); Minuchin (1967); Werner, Stabenau, and Pollin (1970); and Ferreira (1969, 1970). Perhaps the most important application of the family systems perspective to TAT research is the communication deviance (CD) scoring approach first documented by Jones (1977), which has continued to be developed in a host of valuable research studies (Doane, Miklowitz, Oranchak, & Flores de Apodaca, 1989;Doane & Mintz, 1987;Goldstein, 1988;Karon & Widener, 1994;Miklowitz et al, 1986;Miklowitz, Velligan, Goldstein, & Neuchterlein, 1991;Rund, 1989;Sharav, 1991;Velligan, Goldstein, Nuechterlein, Miklowitz, & Ranlett, 1990).…”
