Themed Project Case Study: Quadruple Tanks Control with PLCs

Abstract: A themed project based on the control of a quadruple tank rig using PLCs has been successfully carried out as part of the MSc in Advanced Control and Systems Engineering at the University of Manchester. The themed project involves ten students who address a single multivariable control challenge under the supervision of two academics and four PhD students. As every student is required to write their own MSc dissertation, the key point is the possibility of using different control techniques to be implemented o… Show more

“…Each year, around 14 themed projects are run and two examples are given here. The project on Monolithic Microwave Integrated Circuits consists of the following: The technical details of a further themed project have been published by Carrasco et al 5 As the above projects and certain others provide experience of working with industrial software, the students' employment prospects are enhanced.…”

“…The most important element of the control system is a controller. Personal computers (PCs) connected to data acquisition (DAQ) cards [8]- [11], compact proportional-integral-derivative (PID) control devices [12], programmable logic controllers (PLCs) [13], [14], microcontrollers (μCs) [6], [15], [16] and digital signal processors (DSPs) [17] are the most commonly used controllers in practically all industrial control applications. These controllers interconnect all parts of the physical and non-physical of a system.…”

“…Some of these studies are as follows: A web-based e-learning system was presented for verifying the students' symbolic equations directly using the circuit's schematic; 4 An approach model of web-based mixed learning was investigated with different perception methods; 5 A web-based remote access laboratory was performed by using programmable logic controller (PLC)-SCADA system to contribute for improving knowledge and skills on an industrial application; 6 Training electric circuit analysis by using web-based education system was presented in Weyten et al; 7 An experimental setup of three-tank system was developed by using a web-based control laboratory; 8 MATLAB environment had been used for modeling chaos-based digital modulation techniques by using graphical user interface; 9 The state of the art about remote laboratories paradigms is reviewed for the next generation of the remote laboratories; 10 An overview of state-of-the-art technologies in the development of remote laboratories is identified and discussed; 11 e-Learning and virtual remote laboratory are developed by using Moodle and EJS, the two free outstanding software tools; 12 A themed project has been performed for controlling a quadruple tank rig by using PLCs. 13 In this study, a remote access real-time laboratory which provides both simulation and experimental environment using MATLAB-Server is presented. MATLAB-Server makes connection between real equipment and student.…”
