The 19th century witnessed aprocess of institutionalization in European philosophywhich was to have unforeseen consequences continuingright into the present day.¹ With the changingo ft he shape and scope of faculties at the universities, the role of philosophyshifted ever more to akind of introduction to science. At the sametime, another process took place. Under the guiding influenceofphilosophy, the program of "education through science" would develop together with an ew orientation of the sciences on the model of research.² The gradual establishment at the universities of the seminar (Wolf in Halle, Boeckh in Berlin) led to aprofessionalization of teachingand the creation of new forms of research organization. Through co-operation between the universities and the academies, new researchp rojects emergedw hich would servea sm odels until the very end of the 19th century.Before the rise of the natural sciences and engineering, these projects were mostlyw ithin the realm of Altertumswissenschaften and Classical philology.³ The transformation of science and research emergedfrom the reform movement of New Humanism with which Fichte, Humboldt and Schleiermacher wereassociated, and which would take institutionalform at the beginning of the 19th century with the founding of the Friedrich-Wilhelms University( currently Humboldt-Universität) in Berlin (1809 -10).⁴

1890 wurde Adolf Harnack, damals noch nicht geadelt und als Kirchenhistoriker vergleichsweise frisch nach Berlin gekommen, in die Königlich Preußische Akademie der Wissenschaften aufgenommen, übrigens als dritter Kirchenhistoriker nach Schleiermacher und Neander. Die auf den aufgeklärten König Friedrich den Großen zurückgehenden Statuten sahen die Aufnahme von Theologen nicht vor. Theodor Mommsen, der zuständige Secretar, begrüßte ihn als denjenigen, der die Gabe besitze […] jüngere Genossen zu fruchtbarer Arbeitsgemeinschaft zu gewinnen und bei derjenigen Organisation, welcher die heutige Wissenschaft vor allem bedarf, als Führer aufzutreten. Sie empfinden es, daß die Aufgabe des rechten Akademikers eine andere und eine höhere ist als sich Mitglied der Königlichen Akademie der Wissenschaften zu nennen und statt des bescheidenen Octavformats unserer Zeitschriften im vornehmen Quart gedruckt zu werden. Auch die Wissenschaft hat ihr sociales Problem; wie der Großstaat und die Großindustrie, so ist die Großwissenschaft, die nicht von Einem geleistet, aber von Einem geleitet wird, ein notwendiges Element unserer Kulturentwicklung, und deren rechte Träger sind die Akademien oder sollten es sein. Als einzelner Mann haben Sie in dieser Richtung getan, was wenige Ihnen nachtun werden.
