Theoretical and experimental investigation on local turbulence effect on mixed-lubrication journal bearing during speeding up

Abstract: Due to the relatively low load-carrying capacity, low-viscosity lubricated bearings can easily operate in a mixed-lubrication regime. Furthermore, low lubricant viscosity may cause local turbulence in the area with relatively thick film. To analyze the influence of local turbulence on the transient characteristics of mixed-lubrication bearings, a simulation approach for unsteady mixed-lubrication bearings considering local turbulence effects is proposed. Transient journal center locations are solved via journa… Show more

“…However, the second-order central scheme (2C) cannot accurately predict the pressure variation. Liu, Wang et al have well explained why different discretization schemes give different pressure [2]. A sharp increase in the pressure is observed before the solid obstacle at which point the conversion of flowing fluid kinetic energy changes into pressure energy.…”

“…Several studies are reported in the literature focusing on surface roughness effects on the functionality and lifespan of lubricated contact, and this topic is currently a priority for tribology industries [1][2][3][4]. A thorough assessment of the history of numerical simulation of the ML is well documented in the literature [5][6][7][8].…”

“…Xiang et al [6][7][8] proposed a profile modification method of bearing surfaces to optimize the wear of WLJBs and evaluated the nonlinear dynamic performance for WLJBs considering mixed the thermos-elasto-hydrodynamic effect. Lv et al [9,10] developed the transient mixed-lubrication model that considers turbulence to analyze the performance characteristics of WLJBs with the impact load and speeding up. In the above studies on the static and dynamic characteristics of WLJBs, the bearings are usually assumed to have an ideal cylindrical shape.…”
