Theoretical and Experimental Perspectives of Nuclear Reaction Studies with Radioactive Ion Beams

Abstract: Nuclear reactions are one of the most powerful probes to study the properties of nuclei, in particular nuclei at the limits of stability. Reactions also play an important role in astrophysics and other applications. In order to extract useful information from reaction measurements, experiment goes hand-in-hand with reaction theory. While the last five decades have provided very good qualitative understanding of the processes, the challenge in the field of reaction theory is to have a grasp on the systematic un… Show more

“…The past few years has seen a dramatic increase in the quantity and quality of experimental data for neutron-rich nuclei important for the r process, e.g., [76,77,78,79,80,81,82,83,84,85,54,86,87,88,89,90,25,91,92,93,94,56]. Future measurement campaigns at current and planned experimental facilities such as the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams, will offer an unprecedented access to the production of short-lived isotopes [95].…”

“…These reactions have been measured at RIKEN by Fukuda et al [15] and various breakup observables have been obtained. 3 They therefore constitute excellent test cases for our study.…”

“…The 10 Be-Pb interaction is simulated by an α-Pb optical potential [68] scaled to account for the different size of the nuclei. Since, at this energy, this reaction is dominated by Coulomb excitation of 11 Be the 3 Note that we refrain from discussing the GSI data by Palit et al [14] since they are at a much higher beam energy of 520 MeV/nucleon where a relativistic effects may be important.…”

“…The recent advent of Penning trap and ion storage ring technology has spurred a significant increase in both the quantity and quality (high precision) of nuclear mass measurements [61][62][63][64][65][66][67][68][69]. The coupling of these techniques with radioactive ion beam facilities and future technological advances will open extensive regions of the nuclear chart for measurement [44,[70][71][72][73], including neutron-rich nuclei of interest for the r process [11]. It is not unreasonable to expect that in the next few years, new measurements will be able to shed light on what sort of astrophysical conditions the rare earth peak, and therefore the main r process, formed.…”
