“…In this study, a polygonal HTS conductor assembled by the HTS tapes with high aspect ratio such as YBCO tapes is focused. We derive a numerical model to analyze the current distribution and the AC loss in the HTS tapes which are assembled in a polygonal conductor by extending our previous model [3], [4]. The numerical calculations are done for an isolated HTS tape of rectangle cross section with various aspect ratio and the results are compared with the theoretical values obtained by Norris' theory [6] to check the validity and applicable range of our model.…”

“…Therefore, the AC loss characteristic of the HTS of the HTS assembled conductor should be evaluated relating to the conductor geometrical configuration. In our previous study, we have developed a numerical model to calculate the AC loss in the HTS tapes [3], [4]. The validity of the model for the AC loss calculation of a Bi2223 HTS tape carrying AC transport current in AC external magnetic field has been demonstrated by the comparison with the measured data.…”

“…The total AC loss in the tape is calculated by the numerical model described in the next section. [3], [4] Since the AC self and external magnetic fields electromagnetically couple the superconducting filaments in the tape, it is 1051-8223/$20.00 © 2005 IEEE TABLE I SPECIFICATIONS OF HTS COIL AND TAPE reasonable to model the filamentary region of the tape as a mixture of superconductor and normal metal in this analysis [5]. The transport current flows in the direction of the tape axis and the external AC magnetic field is applied perpendicular to the tape axis.…”

“…The AC losses of the tape in the AC coil are caused by this AC transport current and external AC magnetic field. In our previous study [5], a method to approximately estimate the electromagnetic AC loss in the HTS coil based on the numerical model of the AC loss in HTS tapes [3], [4] has been proposed.…”

“…Therefore, to establish the optimal design of the winding structure of the HTS coil is considered to be effective for the design of the AC power apparatuses. In our previous study [1]- [5], we have proposed a method to approximately estimate the AC loss in the HTS coil by the summation of the total AC loss in the HTS tape over the coil cross section. It has been shown that the experimental AC loss characteristics of the HTS coils wound by the Bi2223/Ag [4].…”
