The main purpose of the study is to form a methodological approach to modeling the process of forming a safety potential for engineering enterprises. The main method used was the method of multi-criteria assessment of alternatives and the matrix of paired comparisons. An assessment was made of alternative options for ensuring the security of the potential of engineering enterprises for different resource requirements. The study has certain limitations related to the fact that the data and enterprises that were used relate to the engineering ones of Eastern Europe. The results of calculating a rational option for ensuring the safety potential of engineering enterprises for different needs in material, financial, personnel and organizational resources by the method of multi-criteria assessment of alternatives can be used in the future to improve monitoring in practice. The main issues considered during the study were to determine the security potential of the engineering company, to determine the resources needed to ensure the security potential. This methodology allows through comparison of certain indicators or indicators, to determine which management decision is most appropriate to the existing situation. The value of the study lies in the formation of a scientific and practical approach to the formation of the safety potential of engineering enterprises, the use of which, in contrast to the existing ones, is based on the use of methods for multi-criteria assessment of alternatives and a matrix of paired comparisons for the advantage of options.

Knowledge management and the competitiveness of small construction firms

Purpose This paper aims to discuss the mediating effects of innovation on the relationship between knowledge management and firm competitiveness. Design/methodology/approach A self-administered questionnaire was used to collect data from small construction firms in the Eastern Region of Peninsular Malaysia. Out of the 190 construction firms surveyed, 153 (80.5%) respondents returned their completed questionnaire. These were used for data analysis. The data were then analyzed using the covariance-based structural equation modeling (SEM). Findings Knowledge management had a direct and significant positive effect on firm competitiveness. Nonetheless, the effect of knowledge management on firm competitiveness was mediated by innovation. This indicates that knowledge management should be supported by technical and administrative innovations in the firm. Research limitations/implications The data collected were from a limited sample of construction firms. In addition, conducting a study on a region of Malaysia may limit the generalizability of the model. Practical implications While knowledge management is crucial for a firm’s competitiveness, technical and administrative innovations must be concurrently improved for a stronger firm competitiveness. This is especially true in terms of financial strength and core competence. Originality/value This paper provides some empirical evidence that technical and administrative innovations fully mediated the relationship between knowledge management and firm competitiveness. The results consolidate the resource-based view on the importance of internal resource and capability of the firm and improve KM research area. It also strengthens the view that KM is a critical factor for firm competitiveness, but a good KM without strong innovation will not increase the competitiveness of small construction firms.

The main purpose of the article is to determine the best planning option for resource support of the management system for the process of increasing the level of competitiveness in the environment of the functioning of the socio-economic system. The relevance of the research topic is added by the fact that the ecology industry is extremely difficult and constantly needs innovation. The activity of an ecological socio-economic system depends on its competitive advantages, level of competitiveness, and resource support. The basic methods that form our methodology are the method of system analysis and pairwise comparison. Based on the results of the study, a structuring of all possible options for resource support for increasing the level of competitiveness of an ecological socio-economic system was formed on the example of Ukrainian ecological enterprises PJSC "Odessa Ecological Enterprise". So, for the ecological socio-economic system selected as an example, a choice of the most rational of the possible options was presented, resources for planning the management system in the process of increasing its competitiveness. The study has a number of limitations and they are related to the impossibility of applying the proposed approach to a larger number of ecological socio-economic systems. Further research should be aimed at expanding the practical aspect and covering more and more socio-economic systems of this sector.
