Theoretical research on the maximum contact stress of involute spur cylindrical gear pairs in the external meshing process

Abstract: The detailed calculation and analysis have been performed on the external meshing process of involute spur cylindrical gear pairs in the light of Herz formulae and gear meshing principle. Analysis results state that the related contact stress calculations in National Standards (GB) have the limitation. In this paper, the location of the maximum contact stresses of involute spur cylindrical gears in the meshing process has been confirmed firstly and definitely and is validated by finite element analysis. These … Show more

“…This is because not only the A þ point is in the state of single pair of teeth but also the calculated comprehensive curvature radius is the smallest in the single tooth meshing area. In addition, according to Wei et al 21 and Yang, 22 the tooth root near the pitch line is prone to pitting, and consequently, the maximum contact stress at point A is reasonable, while for the lower boundary point C of the single tooth meshing area, there also is significant contact stress when the two gears are in single tooth contact.…”

“…Hence, the critical factor ( σ V s ) and also separately contact stress and sliding velocity have been considered and analysed by many researchers in gear design. Using Hertz equation, the magnitude and location of maximum contact stress have been analysed by Yangang Wei . The dynamic characteristics and static stress distribution during meshing of gears were analysed by F. R. M. Romlay .…”
