The objective of this work is to improve the robustness and accuracy of numerical simulations of both ideal and non-ideal explosives by introducing temperature dependence in mechanical equations of state for reactants and products.To this end, we modify existing mechanical equations of state to appropriately approximate the temperature in the reaction zone. Mechanical equations of state of Mie-Grüneisen form are developed with extensions, which allow the temperature to be evaluated appropriately, and the temperature equilibrium condition to be applied robustly. Furthermore the snow plow model is used to capture the effect of porosity on the reactants equation of state.We apply the methodology to predict the velocity of compliantly confined detonation waves. Once reaction rates are calibrated for unconfined detonation velocities, simulations of confined rate sticks and slabs are performed, and the experimental detonation velocities are matched without further parameter alteration, demonstrating the predictive capability of our simulations. We apply the same methodology to both ideal (PBX9502, a high explosive with principal ingredient TATB) and non-ideal (EM120D, an ANE or ammonium nitrate based emulsion) explosives.

Detonation performance experiments and modeling are reported for the explosive PBX 9701, which is composed of 97% 3,3-diamino-4,4-azoxyfurazan (DAAF) and 3% vinylidene fluoride-chlorotrifluoroethylene copolymer (Kel-F 800) binder by weight. PBX 9701 is a newly-developed reducedsensitivity explosive with increased performance relative to the triaminotrinitrobenzene or TATB-based PBX 9502 while still retaining low sensitivity to mechanical insult. The first detonation performance measurements for this formulation are presented, including front-curvature ratesticks and cylinder expansion test data. Prior shock initiation data is also reviewed. These data are used to develop programmed burn and reactive flow calibrations for existing commonly-used performance models which allow engineering calculations with PBX 9701. The calibration process involves several enhancements relative to conventional approaches including the use of an analytical scaling correlation to speed the calibration process and development of a new methodology to improve the consistency between the programmed burn and reactive model calibration process and the resulting calculations. Overall, PBX 9701 is seen to exhibit improved performance relative to insensitive explosives, with a trinitrotoluene (TNT) equivalence of 1.24. The detonation performance properties are found to be well captured by existing models.

The shock and detonation response of high explosives has been an active research topic for more than a century. In recent years, high quality data from experiments using embedded gauges and other diagnostic techniques have inspired the development of a range of new high-fidelity computer models for explosives. The experiments and models have led to new insights, both at the continuum scale applicable to most shock and detonation experiments, and at the mesoscale relevant to hotspots and burning within explosive microstructures. This article reviews the continuum and mesoscale models, and their application to explosive phenomena, gaining insights to aid future model development and improved understanding of the physics of shock initiation and detonation propagation. In particular, it is argued that “desensitization” and the effect of porosity on high explosives can both be explained by the combined effect of thermodynamics and hydrodynamics, rather than the traditional hotspot-based explanations linked to pressure-dependent reaction rates.
