Theoretical update of the charm structure function of the proton

Abstract: We present a theoretical update for the inclusive charm production in deep inelastic scattering. From the soft-gluon resummation at the threshold we derive all the threshold-enhanced contributions of the gluon coefficient function for the charm structure function F c 2 at the next-tonext-to-leading order. Some numerical results are presented.

“…For NC heavy-quark production the convolution of the coefficient functions (especially C 2,g ) and the gluon density is dominated by rather low partonic of-mass energies s and the corresponding soft logarithms in β = (1 − 4m 2 /s) 1/2 at NNLO have recently been completely determined [4]. In our description of the NC structure functions F k (which supersedes our earlier studies [19]) we include these latest improvements [4] together with complete dependence on the renormalization and factorization scales, see e.g. [9,18].…”

“…(15) uses the threshold enhanced terms of Ref. [4] to estimate the dominant corrections at two loops. All explicit dependence on the renormalization and factorization scales and the terms accounting for the scheme transformation from the pole to the running mass at NNLO are, however, exact in Eq.…”

“…In particular, near the production threshold s ≃ 4m 2 h , where large Sudakov double logarithms α k s ln 2k (1 − 4m 2 h /s) dominate at each order, one may wish to apply resummations; see Refs. [121,122,123] for details.…”
