This article proposes a research agenda for situations of coexistence of territorial agricultural and food models. Indeed, new agricultural and food models are being deployed at the territorial scale in response to criticisms of existing models and to meet new challenges. These new models embody archetypes of observed diversity, actors’ projects or standards. We use a bibliographic review and six seminars organized between 2015 and 2017 to propose an analytical framework based on four major dimensions of territorial development: the tension between specialization and diversification, innovation, adaptation and transition of food systems. We show that it is essential to understand the interactions between territorial agricultural and food models (confrontation, complementarity, coevolution, hybridization, etc.), going beyond just the characterization of the diversity of models and the evaluation of their relative performances. We conclude by highlighting the original aspects of the proposed analytical framework, its methodological challenges and the expected consequences for providing support to agricultural and food development in urban and rural territories.

La Geografía Económica ha mostrado un notable dinamismo disciplinar durante las dos primeras décadas del siglo XXI. Este dinamismo se ha traducido en una creciente interacción entre los tres proyectos científicos que han impulsado la disciplina desde sus orígenes a finales del siglo XIX: el proyecto ambiental, preocupado por la relación entre economía y Naturaleza; el proyecto locacional, que identifica los patrones de localización espacial de las actividades económicas y sus implicaciones para el desarrollo regional; y el proyecto estructural-contextual, atento a la interdependencia entre las estructuras globales de acumulación capitalista y la diversidad de trayectorias socioeconómicas locales. Esa interacción intradisciplinar está dando lugar a una Geografía Económica menos compartimentada en escuelas de pensamiento estancas y más híbrida en sus inquietudes y conceptos, como respuesta a la condición transversal de los problemas ambientales, económicos, sociales y políticos que desafían a la Humanidad. Esta hibridación, apoyada en la acreditada capacidad de la Geografía Económica para incorporar los avances teóricos de otras ramas del conocimiento, está muy relacionada con la penetración de los planteamientos ambientalistas en los proyectos locacional y estructural-contextual, tradicionalmente más atentos a los dimensiones espaciales y socio-territoriales del funcionamiento de la economía.

The objective of this paper is to assess the French‐speaking countries contributions to regional science since its creation in the 1950s. France, and other French‐speaking countries, very quickly adhered to the approach of the founding fathers of regional science. French‐language research developed for several years without maintaining major relations with the main streams that flow through regional science. However, the years 2000 and 2010 saw the emergence of streams of thought that strongly irrigate at the international level. The authors of this paper are part of this movement. Here we trace the origins and development of the French‐speaking contribution to regional sciences, while highlighting the originality of the French‐language approach. First, the question of academic and institutional contexts is discussed, with the role of the founders and the peculiar place of Journals and public institutions. Further sections analyse the main contributions coming from economics (local systems of production and innovation, innovative milieus and proximity analysis) and geography (regional development at a global scale, and urban systems and complexity). We conclude with cross‐disciplinary contributions including intra‐urban organization and mobility, territorial governance and territorial development, as well as other approaches to the social sciences, in the contemporary issues of city and territorial governance.
